| On Thursday, December 21st at 2:39 PM, the Dunn's Corners Fire Department was called out for a report of a significant gasoline spill at Dunn's Corners Mobil on Post Road.
Upon arrival, Lt. Jim Westervelt ascertained that a patron had spilled approximately 20 gallons of gasoline onto the ground, all of which had run into a storm drain near the pumps. Chief Frink asked for a HazMat response team to evaluate the situation, and Westerly Fire Dept. send a HazMat technician who determined that the spill was confined and would need to be cleaned up by a commercial HazMat company.
Engine 2 arrived on the scene shortly after Lt. Westervelt, and immediately cordoned off the eastern half of the gas station lot, isolating the spilled fuel and fumes from patrons.
DEM was also called to the scene, and they, with DCFD, worked with the Mobil employees to secure a specialized HazMat mitigation company. The clean-up crew arrived at approximately 6:45 and proceeded to vacuum and package the gasoline soaked sand and mud at the bottom of the drain into 55 gallon drums, to be removed from the site.
At approximately 9:00 PM, the DEM and DCFD declared that the danger of explosion or further contamination had been eliminated, and all DCFD personnel cleared the scene. |
