DCFD Responds To Boy Buried In The Sand
By Lieutenant Carl Johnson IV
August 31, 2009
DCFD along with Charlestown Rescue, Westerly Rescue, Charlestown Fire, Old Mystic Fire, DEM, and Life Star responded to a boy that was buried in a 6 to 8 foot hole on Charlestown East Beach. Charlestown Rescue was first on scene and found a 17 year old that was buried over his head in the beach sand. Rescue crews immediately established a perimeter where people could not enter in order to get oxygen on the boys nose. Crews arrived within 5 minutes and began bringing massive amounts of equipment to the scene. E2 set up a landing zone for Life Star as the extrication was expected to take hours. E4 and Tower 5 supplied ladders, shovels, and numerous amounts of additional equipment. Trench rescue equipment was brought in by Westerly Ambulance and the digging began. It took hundreds of rescuers more than 2 hours to get the boy out and into the waiting Life Star helicopter. The young man is very lucky to be alive. All the area departments worked together like clock work and the rescue operation went together perfect. DCFD would like to thank everyone who participated in this rescue...you all did an amazing job!
