November 12, 2006

Members of the Dunn's Corners Fire Department paid tribute to our Veterans by attending the annual Westerly-Pawcatuck Veteran's Day Parade on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2006. Veteran's Day was initially known as Armistice Day and was coined to commemorate the official ending of the hostilities of World War I, which occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th month in 1918. Over the years, Armistice Day was expanded to a day beyond honoring only those who had died in World War I and the 20th century wars. Today, the holiday honors all men and woman who have served in defending our country. We the men and woman of the Dunn's Corners Fire Department would like to thank all of you who have served our country: past, present, and future.

Car 1 (with Chief Frink and Fire Policeman Bewlay) and Engine 6 (with Firefighters R. Pearce, H. Stedman, M. Stedman, and F. Aldrich) were in attendance. The parade began at 0930 at the World War I memorial in Pawcatuck, CT (at the intersection of West Broad Street/Pequot Trail/ South Broad Street). A prayer was recited in memory of all who have served our great nation, past, present, and future. Taps was then played to commemorate those have made the ultimate sacrifice. The canons were then fired and the parade began.

The four-division parade was led by Grand Marshal John C. Barber, commander of Amancio Falcone Gaccione VFW Post 8955. The parade made its way down South Broad Street towards downtown Pawcatuck, over the Westerly-Pawcatuck Bridge, and onto Broad Street in downtown Westerly. From there the parade proceeded down High Street and onto to Canal Street where the parade commenced at the intersection of Railroad Avenue.

Other marchers of the parade included members of the American Legion Posts 16 and 152, American Veterans Chapter 6, VFW Posts 1265 and 8955, Elks and Rotary clubs, Korean War Veterans Battery D 705th AAA, U.S. Coast Guard, Westerly and Stonington police departments, local fire departments, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local and state politicians.

A special thanks to FP Jeff Bewlay for also taking pictures.

Units: Car 1, Engine 6
