The Dunn's Corners Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Post Road Wednesday night. Occupants advised that there was a fire in the basement. Lt. Schilke, one of the first arriving units, made quick entry into the front entrance to pull a victim from the smoke charged house. A quick line was pulled into the basement to extinguish the fire at the bottom of the stairs. Searches of the first and second floors resulted in the finding of the occupant's cat. Once the fire was out, extension was discovered in the walls of the first floor kitchen. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes of arrival, and ultimately cleared the scene a few hours later. The occupant pulled from the house in the first minutes was transported to RI Hospital and his status is unknown at this time. Westerly Fire sent an engine with manpower to assist and fill in a RIT assignment for the fire. Westerly Ambulance was also on the scene completing rehab for our firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Marshall's office.
