Firefighters Complete 2010 Fight for Air Climb
By Webmaster/Lieutenant Frank Aldrich Jr.
March 4, 2010
On Saturday, February 27th, 5 firefighters from the Dunn's Corners and Watch Hill Fire Departments participated in the American Lung Associations's (ALA) 2010 Fight for Air Climb. The event is a fundraiser for ALA and is a unique event testing ones physical strength, stamina, and lung power. Approximately 500 people took to the inside staircase of the One Financial Plaza building in Providence, RI. In 20 second intervals, each climber raced the clock and climbed to the top. The top being 29 floors, 58 flights, 597 stairs from ground level. The event started at 0900 and ended at 1200, with a climber taking to the stairs every 20 seconds over the course of 3 hours.
The event featured a Firefighter Division in which the team was enrolled. For the climb, all members of the team had to wear their structural firefighting gear which included coat, pants, boots, gloves, helmet, hood, air tank, and mask...approximately an additional 60+ lbs. The team has been training at the Westerly Middle School a few nights a week since the start of the new year and also participated in the practice climb a few weeks ago.
Each member of the team completed the climb. Their times are listed below:
Lt. Carl Johnson (7 min 18 sec) Lt. Frank Aldrich (8 min 26 sec) FF Paul Senita (8 min 28 sec) Chief Michael Frink (8 min 42 sec) Lt. Brian Holdredge (9 min 5 sec)
The team placed 16th out of 45 firefighter teams.
An after party was hosted by McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon after the climb. Individual and team awards were presented for the fastest times. Fundraising awards will be presented once the fundraising is closed after March 13th. As of today, DCFD is the top fundraising team with $4,185.00 and Lt. Johnson is the top fundraiser with $1,840.00. There is still time to donate. If interested, you can click on the link below:
