Tue, 10 Jan 2012 22:26:24 GMT http://www.dunnscornersfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=313 SCENARIO BASED TRAINING http://www.dunnscornersfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=315 Firefighters can only learn so much by reading textbooks. Hands-on training presents an opportunity for firefighters to physically practice techniques and sharpen their skills. On December 11th the Dunn's Corners Fire Department acquired a structure located at 231 Post Road scheduled for demolition. DCFD firefighters had the opportunity to conduct hands-on drills on a variety of topics, including vertical and horizontal ventilation; forcible entry; mayday drills; search and rescue; firefighter rescue techniques; and flowing water. A special thank you to Rick Quattromani for donating the building to DCFD for training. Dunn's Corners Fire Department appreciates any future opportunities to train in acquired structures scheduled for demolition. Thanks to Department Photographer Rebecca Schilke for the photos. Different types of personal safety systems are available which allow firefighters to exit the room in a fast & controlled way. DCFD Firefighters are equipped with a personal safety system which includes a 35' personal escape rope, escape eight, two locking carabiners and a Class II harness in their bunker gear. This system enables our firefighters the ability to tie off to an object in the room, exit through the window, and descend to the ground safely. As part of our annual self-rescue training we held a two part training this year. The first part of the training was classroom based where we discussed safety on the fire ground, bailout techniques and reviewed our rope rescue bags & knots. For the second part of the training we traveled to the Union Training Drill Tower in South Kingstown on Sunday, November 20th. The purpose of this training was a hands-on practical for self rescue bail out. All firefighters had the chance to practice multiple bailout techniques from the 1st and 2nd floor of the drill tower shown in the pictures below. For additional safety we wore an additional Class III harness attached to a belay system. During the different bailout techniques, we wore our full turnout gear with SCBA (approx 60 ibs) and anchored our life safety rope to a handrail inside of the building or a halligan tool through a subfloor. The following descent techniques were also practiced or demonstrated during training: hand & knot, rescue eight and personal descender w/Crosby Hook. Thank you to our instructor, Captain Chris Brademeire, for a job well done. We look forward to training with firefighters from the Union Fire District in the future. Wed, 23 Nov 2011 06:07:20 GMT http://www.dunnscornersfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=312 Fall Back on Sound Advice: Time to Change Your Clock AND Your Smoke Alarm & Carbon Monoxide Detector's Batteries http://www.dunnscornersfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=311 The Dunn's Corners Fire Department would like to remind you when you set your clocks back this weekend (Sunday November 6th at 2AM) that you also change your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. DCFD recommends that you replace the batteries when the time changes from standard daylight savings each spring and fall. "Change your clock, change your battery," is a positive theme and has become a common phrase. Smoke detectors have saved many lives and may save yours. More than 50% of fatal residential fires take place at night when people are sleeping. If a fire starts while your family is asleep, smoke detectors will wake you up. They can make the difference between life and death in a fire emergency. - Smoke alarms cut your chances of dying in a home fire nearly in half. Smoke alarms sense abnormal amounts of smoke or invisible combustion gases in the air. They can detect both smoldering and flaming fires. - If a fire occurs inside a bedroom, dangerous gases can cause heavier sleep. Smoke alarms inside bedrooms will be more likely to wake you. - Vacuum cobwebs and dust from your smoke alarms monthly. Smoke alarms are less sensitive when they are dirty. Keep them operating most efficiently. - Use the test button to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors once a month. The test feature tests all electronic functions. If necessary, replace batteries immediately. Make sure children know what your detectors sound like. - Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years. Smoke alarms become less sensitive over time. This is a joint recommendation by the National Fire Protection Association and the US. Consumer Products Safety Commission. - Carbon monoxide detectors can detect the colorless and odorless gas which is highly toxic before it builds up to dangerous levels. They should be used in addition to smoke detectors. For more information on smoke alarms, you can go to the U.S. Fire Administration page at: http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/campaigns/smokealarms/alarms/index.shtm If you have any questions in regard to smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors, feel free to email us at info@dunnscornersfire.com. Remember - A WORKING SMOKE ALARM & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!
